Hip Hop Site – Elegant and Affordable

If you think that hip hop can’t be elegant – you are mistaken. If you think that a good website can be inexpensive – you are right. At least the site of the Northside Hip Hop Archives proves that.

Client

The team of Canadian hip hop enthusiasts from Toronto have asked us to transfer their Hip Hop Archive website. Their previous platform, Adobe Business Catalyst,was shutting down, and the site had to be migrated to a new one. The website was also overdue for some visual and functional improvement.

GOAL

The site had to be transferred from the Adobe Business Catalyst platform to the WordPress CMS, and it had to perform well, no matter how much audio, graphic and video materials it contained.

And, which is very important, it had to be low-cost.

The goal was set, and the work began.

PROGRESS

First of all, we had to install and customize the Obsidian theme that was chosen by the Northside Hip Hop team. They had a great logo, and we just had to adjust the theme visual elements to match it perfectly and structure it to fit the content. To do this, we created a subdomain on the client’s hosting and installed the chosen WP theme there. Thus, we made a dev site, where we continued our development work.

The site structure was transferred with some minor changes. We kept some pages similar to those from the old site, and some had to be made from scratch or upgraded. We also made a video & photo gallery for the Event page, a big upgrade from the previous iteration. Now the client can create a gallery for each event in a straightforward way. Along with that, we uploaded various content – audio and video files, images, lyrics and even audio files embedded in image files.

Of course, before going live the site was tested. We tested design, usability, responsiveness, cross-browser compatibility, code cleanliness. When the site was ready, it was time to switch the subdomain name to the domain name and go live.

The final step was to provide the client with clear instructions of how to administrate the site and to fill it with content.

And here is the site, up and running on its old URL but in a new look and with new possibilities!

ACHIEVED RESULT

Here is the LIVE WEBSITE, have a look at it, listen to some good music and touch the history of hip hop. We’ve done our best to make the new site clean, user-friendly and inspiring. And NSHH team can easily update it with new songs, lyrics and articles ensuring it stays fresh.
